We own Spiked Roses—an exclusive, membership only establishment in New Orleans where money or lineage is the only way in. It is for the gentlemen who own everything and never hear the word no.
Sipping on whiskey, smoking cigars, and conducting multi-million dollar deals in our own personal playground of indulgence, there isn’t anything I can’t have… and that includes HER. I can also have HER if I want.
And I want.

Bastards and Whiskey is the first book in a new series, Top Shelf. I loved the concept of the Spiked Roses, an exclusive, men’s only membership club, set in New Orleans. The story moves along at a brisk, page turning pace and the end will give us the happy sigh we love in our romance novels. But, beware! There’s a little taboo in the story for those of us that like to wander into the dark side.
Anita Kyle’s had a rough life growing up in Muckaluk, Nevada. It can barely be called a town in the desert, exit 222, mile marker 51, where truckers stop for a fill-up, near Coal Canyon. She started working six years ago, at fifteen, as a caregiver and housekeeper for Virgie Peterson, an older lady who actually owned her own home, and needed help. She lied and said she was sixteen to help her grandparents, who raised her, out financially. They struggled to buy food and pay the electric bill, so every little bit helped.
“I’d once tried to hitchhike when I was thirteen with no destination in mind. My meemaw got wind of it and spanked me with a carpet beater for doing so.”
“Your restless soul will get you killed,” she had said between stinging swats
“And though I never tried to hitchhike again, I was never able to settle my soul like the other people who lived along the interstate had. My soul screamed for release. It hollered and pounded from deep within, begging for mercy.”
They were both dead now and she counted Virgie and Roy, her biker tattoo artist, as her only friends. Anita’s entire right side of her body is covered in colorful flower tattoos, paid for with six packs of beer, to Roy.
Kenneth Saxon is a wealthy attorney living in NOLA. He and six other obscenely wealthy business men owned the exclusive, private Spiked Roses club. It catered to men that had very peculiar tastes and needs. They’ve had to recently make new rules and contracts for the members and the female staff, after having to make several multi-million dollar settlements to some of the unhappy women, in order to keep things quiet. The new contracts, which will now be negotiated in the private Tasting Room, state that once you buy one of the girls you own her until the end of the contract and it includes a severance package for the women involved. There are a few other rules involved, including ones for anyone who leaves before the contract ends. Oh, and it’s signed with a drop of blood, from both parties! So after cleaning house and firing the old staff they go about hiring all new girls and someone to keep things in line.
“And you don’t think this is prostitution? You are saying you want our members to buy the women. That’s illegal if you ask me, Mr. Lawyer.”
“No, the members are asked to pay when the sex ends. When they are done and want to end the contract. The sex is free, but ending it is not. The Tasting Room is different, and yes, I guess you could call it prostitution, or you can call it arranged dating. But no one is being forced to enter that room.”
Vigie talks Anita into moving to New Orleans where she lived happily, several decades ago, and had a friend there that owned a boarding house. After making arrangements for Anita to stay there, she buys her a bus ticket and pays a month’s rent for her, asking for nothing more than a promise from Anita to write letters and tell her about her new adventures. After arriving in NOLA, Marlowe, of the other boarders, quickly tells Anita the club she works at is hiring. She’s given an interview and hired on the spot. The club is the Spiked Roses and she was interviewed by Kenneth, himself. He’s a little skeptical of the new hire but also very intrigued. Kenneth’s always been so good at reading people, as a successful lawyer, it’s served him very well over the years.
“Generally at Spike Roses, we like our women to be a little more…delicate. Delicate flowers I suppose you could say.”
“I’m a delicate flower who happens to like the fucking thorns.”
“Who the hell was this woman? She was very cool and collected, and yet so very naïve. Parts of her were hard, and I could easily see parts of her were soft. She was a jagged edge that I wanted to touch, even if it meant making me bleed.”
Poor Anita doesn’t know what she’s in for, after volunteering to go to a Tasting Room party, and signing a contract for Dark Play. She was warned by Marlowe not to attend but Anita feels she’s between a rock and a hard place. She received some alarming news regarding Virgie and is desperate to get her hands on some money to save her. After knowing what Anita’s done, Kenneth is beside himself not wanting to admit to anyone, much less himself, that he’s attracted to Anita. And so, apparently, is she.
“He’d cracked the spine of a book that had yet to be opened, and chapter one had left me so hungry to see what would come. I was hooked. Hooked.”
This is where the story goes into high gear! Get ready for a fast ride; I stayed up late, anxious to get to the end. And I’m so happy to know there are at least two more stories in the series that are in the works. Cheers! Here’s to all of us that love Top Shelf whiskey, it goes down so smooth.
