Being the only woman working for a professional baseball team isn’t easy. As the San Diego Shock’s newest athletic trainer, Allie knows all about long hours, endless travel, and warding off players’ advances. Given she’s already the subject of a handful of rumors about how “lucky” she was to have earned such a coveted position, she can’t so much as flutter an eyelash a player’s way if she wants to be taken seriously.
But number eleven is doing more than fluttering eyelashes Allie’s way. Far more. Luke Archer is at the top of his game and doesn’t let the fear of striking out keep him from swinging. This is a motto he applies both on and off the field, but Allie appears immune, seeming to view Luke as nothing more than caution tape on legs.
He’s a player, and in Allie’s experience, they’re all the same. She won’t risk her job or her heart to another one, no matter how different this one claims to be. But as Allie gets to know him, she discovers the number eleven the public thinks they know is very different from the real Luke Archer. He seems too good to be true.
And maybe he is.
Allie will have to confront the stories attached to a player of Luke Archer’s stature and decide who she’ll put her faith in—The man she’s falling for? Or the rumors?
Stealing Home is one of those books that just hit all the right buttons for me. It had everything that I love, a dirty talking hero, a strong heroine, a forbidden relationship, and just the right amount of angst. Nicole hit this one out of the park!
“Baseball was in my blood, and sports medicine was in my heart.”
Allie is a sports trainer who has everything to lose when the star player on the team takes an interest in her. She’s worked hard to get where she is and to be taken seriously in a male-dominated profession. Allie is the kind of heroine I love. She works twice as hard as everyone else to prove she belongs and she doesn’t compromise her integrity to get ahead. Letting Luke Archer in could jeopardize not only her job, but her future career.
“If it got out that I was sleeping with the star of the team, no one would ever take me seriously again.”
Luke is an amazing man, but Allie isn’t convinced that he’s different from other players she has known. I absolutely fell in love with Luke. He’s the complete package of sweet and sexy, with a dirty mouth to top it all off. He drew me in right away with his laid back attitude and charming ways. He’s selfless and lives well below his means, shirking the typical persona of an elite pro athlete.
“ …let me just remind you that I’m a baseball player…I’m good with my hands, know what to do with a big stick, and am used to getting dirty.”
Once these two submit to their feelings, the level of hotness goes through the roof. Luke opens up to Allie in ways she’s not sure she can trust. Is this temporary? Or could it be something more? She has to overcome her hurt feelings from the past and trust what she has in the present, or she may lose it all. There is just enough angst to keep things interesting, but it’s not drawn out for the sake of drama.
“Nothing about Luke Archer was what it seemed. I loved that about him. It was also what I feared about him.”
I fell in love with Allie and Luke, invested in their journey from beginning to end. I read this entire book in one sitting with a smile on my face the whole time. This is the kind of story that just makes your heart happy to read. Nicole’s writing just flows across the page, bringing these characters to life.
“Because sometimes you had to fight for the things you wanted. Sometimes you had to steal the life you wanted before fate realized you were coming. I’d stolen home too, and it was one for the record books.”
